SAFETY RECALL 86S15 - COMPLIANCE RECALL OF CERTAIN 1985/86 F-250 4X4 TRUCK FOR INSPECTION AND, IF NECESSARY, INSTALLATION OF A MIDSHIP FUEL TANK FRONT SHIELDDear Owner:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the U.S. National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Ford Motor Company has determined that certain 1985/86 F-250 4x4 trucks fail to meet the U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 301, "Fuel System Integrity".
REASONS FOR THIS RECALL:
A protective shield may not have been installed on the front of the midship fuel tank on your truck. The shield is designed to help protect the fuel tank during a 30 mph frontal barrier crash as specified in the Standard. A damaged fuel tank could leak and cause risk of fire.
SERVICE TO BE PERFORMED:
At no cost to you, your dealer will inspect your truck and, if necessary, will install the front midship fuel tank shield. The time needed to do this work is about two hours.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:
Please call your dealer, without delay, and ask for a service date. When you take your truck in, give the enclosed Form 1864 to the dealer. If you misplace the Form, your dealer will still do the work, free of charge.
TO CHECK FOR OTHER RECALLS (Owners residing in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands):
When you call your dealer about this recall, ask for a computer check of the "CARES" system to see if your truck needs other recall work. If it does, the dealer can tell you about the required service.
If you are no longer the owner, please fill out Section 1 of the enclosed prepaid postcard and mail it to us.
IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE GETTING THE SERVICE DONE:
If the dealer does not make the repair promptly and without charge, please mail Section 3 of the prepaid postcard to us. You may also send a complaint to the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 400 Seventh Street, SW, Washington, DC 20590; or, you may call the toll free Auto Safety Hotline 800-424-9393.
We regret the inconvenience this service may cause you; but, we want you to have the work completed for your safety and satisfaction with your Ford-built truck.
