Subject: Delivery Hold and Safety Recall 86S15 - Compliance Recall of Certain 1985/86 F-250 4x4 Truck for Inspectlon and, If Necessary, Installation of A Midship Fuel Tank Front Shield

VEHICLES INVOLVED:

Vehicles involved in this recall service are 1985/86 F-250 4x4, 133" wheel base trucks equipped with 5.0 liter engines and AOD transmissions. Affected vehicles were built March 3, 1986 through May 20, 1986 at the Norfolk Assembly Plant and November 5, 1984 through May 13, 1986 at the Michigan Truck Assembly Plant.

DESCRIPTION OF THE NON-COMPLIANCE:

The front shield of the midship fuel tank may have been omitted from some of the subject vehicles due to an operator error during assembly. The front shield was intended to be installed on these vehicles for added assurance of compliance with applicable requirements of U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 301, "Fuel System Integrity". Ford Motor Company would like to install the fuel tank front shield on affected vehicles even though, in Ford's judgment, a truck built without the front shield is likely to meet applicable requirements of FMVSS No. 301. To correct this condition, the midship fuel tank will be inspected and, if necessary, a fuel tank front shield installed.

-IMPORTANTSALES OR DELIVERY OF VEHICLES THAT DO NOT CONFORM TO APPLICABLE U.S. FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS MAY SUBJECT THE DEALER (IN LOCATIONS SUBJECT TO U.S. LAW) TO CIVIL PENALTIES UNDER THE U.S. NATIONAL TRAFFIC AND MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY ACT.
